If more people are using and making eco bags - which by the way, should be used for grocery and not as an everyday tote - one can also start being eco-friendly with beauty products. Not all beauty brands are aware of the consequences of their production processes. Or they may be aware, but they're not doing anything about it. Chemicals are still used on plant crops that are then used in face creams and fragrances. Some cosmetic fillers even require extensive farming that lead to deforestation. Yet there are brands out there who limit their chemical production and waste and use botanical ingredients. If we are not able to use these products, we can still become eco-beautiful by following these 8 tips (according to In Style's Beauty Know It All):
1) Use organic cotton wool. Organic cotton wool is by far the most environmental-friendly way of wiping off your make-up. The ordinary cotton wools use a quarter of the world's insecticides and up to 80,000 chemicals!
2) Super-size your beauty bottles. Don't make tipid and go big time next time. More product equals less packaging, equals less trips to the grocery, equals less manufacturing. Plus the larger the bottle (at least a litre), the easier it is to recycle! Just be aware of the product lifespan before you start hoarding.
3) Go for refillables. When buying a product, check the packaging if they're refillable-friendly. Prada Parfum De Sac includes a refillable purse spray and two refills, while Aveda, Prescriptives, Shu Uemura, Suqqu, Trish McEvoy have refillable compacts.
4) Switch back to soap. Switch back to soap?!? Well, yes it will prevent plastic waste from shower gel bottles... or I can just resort to the other 7 tips instead. Lol.
5) Avoid disposables. Avoid cleansing wipes that are non-biodegradable, stick to the likes of Botanics Quick Fix Cleansing Wipes. Also, ditch those one-time-use razors and go for those with replacement heads instead.
6) Support brands that use recycled plastic. Body Shop has switched to 100 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, estimating about 9 million less plastic bottles created per year! Also consider clear PET plastic bottles over colored ones.
7) Go box/bag-free. It sure is a waste for box packaging to just be disposed of right after purchase. Try to go for brands that do not come with these cartons.
8) Cutting down on energy consumption by 10% can make a big difference. Lower your thermostat or limit the use of your hairdryer. Beauty companies that offset carbon emissions and support alternative energy suppliers include Louise Galvin haircare, Aveda and Burt's Bees. Body Shop, meanwhile, is aiming to become a carbon-neutral retailer by 2010!
